This week I’m sharing favorite junking finds in Greenback Tennessee. What a neat little store! Hubby and I made a little getaway to Tennessee last week to visit our daughter.
And when you’re a true picker like me, you find places to pick wherever you are. You use up phone data to research locations to the local thrift stores. You comb through craigslist for the local estate and yard sales, and you keep your eye peeled for little places off the beaten path. Such was Greenback.
I bet you’ve never heard of Greenback. Well, I guess I really hadn’t either, although hubby reminded me we’d been there once for a parade. And the only reason I found it was because we were taking a shortcut back to the campground. 3 blinks and you’re through it. Oh yes, we stayed in our home-away-from-home while in Tennessee…our vintage RV motorhome, over 20 years old, but comfy.

When I’m on the hunt, I don’t go to antique shops much because they’re usually a lot more than the garage sale prices I’m used to. I started not to even stop, but it was a cute little storefront.
I was on vacation. Why not? A little bell on the doorknob jingled as I walked into “The Home Decor Resale Store.” Walls of wooden shelves packed with interesting doodads and merchandise greeted me. Larger items artfully arranged were in the center of the store. Slowly I browsed up and down several times so as not to miss anything.
I met the two store cats! Here’s “Connie” with Janet, the store owner. Connie was talkative and followed me wherever I went, but “nosirree bob,” she says. “You aren’t picking me up!”
I forget what this one’s name was.
I later learned the Home Decor Resale Store had been the General Store at one time, and all those fine-looking wooden shelves are original. What I couldn’t believe were the prices! So inexpensive!
I thought this was the cutest little side table.
I loved the prices here….more like garage sale prices! So this is what I found. It doesn’t seem like much. I could have bought more, but I already had a lot from thrift stores and estate sales. I’m dying to show you those…on another day.

Showing my ignorance, but I thought this was a fancy dustpan! Do YOU know what it is?
To not keep you in suspense, it’s an antique crumb tray. Very ornate is it not? I can just see this being used in Gone With the Wind. $8
I thought these 3 rose pictures were lovely. All for $15.
So if I’ve whetted your appetite just a bit, and you have a hankering to visit Greenback Tennessee, it’s about 15 miles south of Maryville, off Highway 411 and Hiway 95. (Maryville and Townsend Tennessee are jumping off points to visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.) Turn right on Hiway 95 and go all the way till it tees into Morganton Road, a quick dogleg to the left, and you’re practically at the store. Address is 6710 Morganton Rd. Open Tues, Wed, Thurs, 10-5. On Another Note~
My hubby and I are very sad this week because we unexpectedly said goodbye to our beloved little “Beezer,” a Maltese rescue we’d had for 15 years. Unbeknownst to us, he developed a brain tumor which had grown into the balance center of the brain, rendering him unable to walk, among other things. It happened so quickly, we were shocked and unprepared. I know we made the right decision, and the vet concurred, but it’s always sad, isn’t it, when you lose a beloved pet?

I mentioned this blog post to my boyfriend and he told me that his grandmother was born about one block from this store on Elm. Her father was born in Greenback also, in 1892. The store looks like a really fun place to shop, and you found some excellent treasures. Thank you for sharing the details of your adventure, and sorry to hear about your pet 🙁
What a small world! Someone from Greenback! Well, I thought it was a lovely little unspoiled town. I had no idea it went back as far as 1892, but then again, I can believe it. The store is a fun place to shop. Maybe you can get by there one day.
I feel your pain about your special little dog. We’ve had to euthanize 4 cats in the last year and a half. They were all old and developed various illnesses. It was unlucky for us that they were all about the same age. We have decided from the beginning, if they aren’t having a good time any more, we will help them in their journey to The Rainbow Bridge. It’s what we do as their human companions. The ones who are left are about 11, 9, 4 and 3. We suppose we’ll have plenty of time with them, but that’s not always true. Anything can happen. We always know that we gave them the best care while they are with us. Knowing this helps saying goodbye a teeny tiny bit easier. I give my best to you as you grieve your little one’s passing. It isn’t easy. My thoughts are with you.
Oh my goodness, to have so many close together in age to lose! I like what you say…if they’re not having a good time anymore, we will help them in their journey to the Rainbow Bridge. The vet said, it was our final act of love, and I believe it. We just weren’t prepared. Thank you so much for the kindness Fonda.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your sweet Beezer. I lost my 17 yr old cat Charlie about 2 yrs ago and I will miss him forever. I too love little ‘antique’ shops in out of way places, I find their prices can be like a garage sale! Love some of the things you found!
Wow, 17 years! I know you miss him! The place is empty without your Charlie and our Beezer. I had a special cat named “Quitty,” and I’ll miss her forever too. Thanks for the sweet comments Linda. Now we know to keep looking for out-of-the-way places!
Oh I’m so sorry about your little guy. Yes, we’ve lost three dogs all at young ages unfortunately but our Ava (a chocolate cocker spaniel) is now at the ripe old age of 7! It is always difficult to lose them — they are such a part of you. Especially hard I bet since it was unexpected. You and I are just the same in our ‘hunt’ for treasures. I won’t even glance at an ‘antique’ shop but give me an old barn or junk yard and I’m in. That crumb scraper is beautiful! You sure got some beautiful things!

I hardly ever shop at antique stores either. Give me Good Will, the Restore store or a garage sale or junky junk shop any day!
You found some good stuff at the little shop in Greenback. It sounds like a great place to visit. I imagine the town being more “unspoiled” than most places.
I am so sorry for your loss of your little dog. Losing a dear pet can be just devastating. I have euthanized two dogs and after the second–a chow-chow that my daughters brought in off the street one day–I vowed I’d never do it again. It was just so painful. To me, it is one thing if a pet dies of natural or accidental causes, but for their life to end by my hand is just so hard. Anyway, I lasted for a year with no four-legged in my house and it just felt so quiet and kind of dead. So I began searching for another dog and found my black Labradoodle that I tho’t was a Standard Poodle, in a town about an hour’s drive from me. He was about six months old and looked like a black curly lamb! We’ve been best friends ever since. He is nine now and I imagine I won’t have him a lot longer but I try not to think about that. His name is Tavi which is Aramaic for “good” and he is a good dog. Loves everybody, is gentle with the grandkids and likes most other dogs. He is long-suffering as he lives with my daughter’s two cats who are elderly and crotchety. Anyway, I’m sorry you have lost your little guy so suddenly, especially having been together for so many years.
You will always miss him, I know. Hopefully, the loss can gradually change into sweet memories of good times with him.
Thank you Naomi. You understand how painful this is…well, I’m sure many people do. I’m newly shocked every time. I’m glad you found Tavi to be your companion. He sounds like a wonderful dog! Beezer was like that too…got along with our 2 cats. I can’t imagine life without a dog in it. We are starting our search now.
Oh I am so sorry about your loss! My parents just lost their fur baby last month and we were all devastated.
I actually have heard of Greenback because my parents used to live in Chattanooga and we would go through there taking the back way to the Smokies.

First off I am so sorry for your loss. I have lost so many special pets, the most recent being in December. And it is so difficult. Beezer looks like a good buddy to you and your husband.
The antique store you discovered looks so interesting and not just because of the shop kitties. I saw a few things that got me inspired. You were sort of right about the crumb catcher, it is like a dust pan for crumbs.

Florence isn’t it nice to stumble into a store expecting the worst and coming out with an an entirely different point of view. I had the opposite experience when I went to the salvation army a few months back. I’m going to stick to garage sales from now on. I have never seen a crumb tray and cannot figure out what it is supposed to be used for. Do you brush the crumbs off the table using the brush onto the tray? And what about the tablecloth?
So sorry to hear about your beloved dog. I had lost a cat many years ago and it was devastating. Also our beloved dog died last year. Our sweet Flavio is still with us.
Btw, the new theme of your blog looks great. Should I guess that your favorite color is red?

The little shop you found off the beaten track sounds like an abSoooooLute gem. Aren’t those the best. That crumb duster is gorgeous. Are the paintings oils?

Losing a loved animal is awful. I still cry when I think about them.
Love the little store. In the one picture there is an old metal dustpan hanging on the wall. It made me remember my mother, because she had one just like it and loved the little front on it because it caught the dirt. Lovely how these vintage things bring back memories.
