Changing the House Fails

September 25, 2016 by Florence 31 Comments

Changing the house fails…what would I change? Many things. For the most part I like our floor plan. I just want more cabinets, and storage. I don’t want to sound ungrateful because I’m really not.

What I really want to change are the things IN the house, and they are changeable, but I’m not motivated…partly because I’m over 60? That’ll do.

A few years ago, we spent big bucks on a decorator to tell us what to do with our problem kitchen. In came granite countertops (which we dislike), and THIS.

changing the house fails

I love the china cabinet, which came from a 1930’s house in a historic neighborhood where we used to live. But I hate the color. Gushing about brown as the hot new trend in kitchen decor, the decorator convinced us this was IT. Something did have to be done about the awful green I painted it. Reminding myself I needed help with paint colors, and that’s why I hired the decorator, I said to myself confidently, “It’ll grow on me.” Well, guess what? I still hate it, and so does Gary.

Gary and I argued about color more in our early years than anything else. Unlike most men, he actively involved himself in color and decor choices, and I usually let him have his way to keep peace. How is it that now we’re on the same wavelength??!

A few years ago, we paid to have this very old couch recovered because it’s comfortable., Agonizing about fabric, we visited every store in town and finally settled on this. While I love the colors and the design, the first time I saw the finished sofa, my face fell.

changing the house fails

The problem was, I didn’t buy enough fringe. You would think the upholsterer would call and say, “why don’t you leave the fringe off the small pillows, and then I will have enough to put around the sofa?” But he didn’t do that. The fringe stopped where he ran out, and it looks odd. Turns out I don’t like the look of the fringe on the big pillows anyway.

Custom made from a furniture store, another bomb. How is it that the chair model in the store is comfortable, but YOURS isn’t? Though we agreed on fabric, once it arrived, Gary didn’t like it. MY goal was keeping the dog away, but the minute my back turned he peed on the skirt. Grrr.

changing the house fails

Our glass-topped coffee table (and breakfast room table), outdated several years. “But I like it,” Gary insists. Tables in OUR house aren’t used for styling or eating anyway…they are simply catch-alls. A vintage tavern table sits in our basement unused, which is what I would like to use. So we have this dilemma–our junk…I don’t say much about HIS,  because he’s so patient about mine.

changing the house fails

Made many years ago, I decided to leave the Christmas swag up year-round. Gary obligingly cut plywood in the proper shape and dimensions, and I glued on pinecones and nuts. It’s pretty old now, and I’m tired of it. I’ve been planning on tossing it for the last 5 years, but you know what happened? Every person bringing food when I was laid up this summer with broken bones loved it. New eyes, new appreciation!

changing the house fails

The following 3 pieces are just there because I don’t have anywhere else to put them.

changing the house fails

A darling little armoire a friend gave us, but needs some minor repairs. I painted this pre-blog days. Not my favorite color, but Etsy says “spicy mustard” is trendy. I think it looks like barf unappealing.

changing the house fails

This is a secretary/chest that I did for my booth a while back, and now I don’t have the booth. I think I got a bit over-zealous with the distressing, don’t you?

changing the house fails

A vintage doctor’s cabinet that I painted a lonnng time ago. I cant remember why pink, but it needs to go, along with all these other goodies. How about you? Are you with me on changing the house fails? Am I the only one that lives with problem pieces?

Create Late Summer Color with Hardy Plants in Cool Yard Sale Junk

August 7, 2016 by Florence 14 Comments

Yes you can create late summer color with hardy plants in cool yard sale junk even though summer is almost over. Most annuals are either too leggy or burned, especially considering the heat wave this summer. But two plants in the South are still thriving during the hottest part of our Summer heat in August and September.

I know everyone has Fall on the brain, and you’re probably thinking…it’s a bit late to be talking about plants and the growing season. But I wanted to show you how to create late summer color with hardy plants and cool yard sale junk. These will grow anywhere and enhance your yard.

Sedum Acre and Portaluca are two favorites that consistently produce even during periods of drought, heat, rain, or late season.

Sedum Acre is a hardy trailing succulent I planted 20 years ago and never dies. Little yellow flowers emerge in Spring.

The other is Portaluca which I love because it’s pretty and an easy dependable bloomer.

Potted Portaluca

Portaluca Pluses:

Drought-tolerant

Heat-tolerant

Rain-tolerant

Short plant at about 5-6″

Looks great in containers

Blooms yellow, pink, or red

Aren’t perennials, but do return if cold isn’t severe

Plant it and forget it

Sedum Acre Pluses:

Looks good in containers

Easy to grow

Drought-tolerant

Rain-tolerant

Heat-tolerant

Easy to thin out

Easy to transplant

Grows in the South all year round

Trails beautifully, but when it starts browning, just grab handfuls and toss. You don’t even have to use clippers.

I often just throw it on top of the ground and it takes root.

Plant it and forget it

Untitled design (2)Below are the vignettes I created out of yard sale and thrift store finds. You will see a liberal planting of Portaluca and Sedum Acre.

All the pieces in the above photo are yard sale finds:

Even the silver pot and the other large pot to the right were curbside finds.

I absolutely love the 2 pottery vases with faces! Yard sale finds!

Chippy table…yard sale find

Enamel teapot holding Portaluca…my attic.

The dark green picture is tin. I found it in a yard sale recently. It makes a great backdrop!

Wooden cabinet door backdrop was a yard sale find where I experimented with crackle finish.

Do you see the small white tiered cups below? You are looking at a repurposed  Wilton cupcake holder. I don’t use cupcake holders, and I rarely make cupcakes. In fact, I hate to cook so I don’t know why I bought it in the first place, but it was cheap. I was about to put it in my next yard sale, when I hit upon the idea of turning it into a planter. Yes, unfortunately, it looks a little scraggly!

I hate to admit it, but this was sort of a fail, even though we tenderly nursed it along. Check out this wonderful repurpose of a Wilton cupcake holder with succulents by Cassidy Tuttle, where I got the idea. Hers looks sooo much better! http://www.succulentsandsunshine.com/succulents-in-a-cupcake-stand/

Check out her blog too for more tips on growing succulents. http://www.succulentsandsunshine.com/

See how Sedum Acre trails? Planted in an open metal basket (curbside find) that doesn’t hold water well, yet the sedum is very healthy.

Vintage Picker Off Limits Home Tour

July 17, 2016 by Florence 32 Comments

Vintage Picker off limits home tour? Let me explain. I often read that people enjoy seeing behind-the-scenes spaces, and I’m going to show it to you. This is reality people, but be forewarned! While I enjoy reading and drooling over beautiful home decor blogs…well, let’s just say I march to the beat of a different drummer.

For the last 3 months, (ever since my blog began really) I have been stuck in a recliner waiting on broken bones to heal, so my not-so-neat hubby has been caretaker, cook, bottle washer, pet caretaker, and package shipper. He does it all uncomplainingly, and not only takes care of me, but our dog and 2 cats. And does all of my shipping for me while I’m laid up.

While I’m recovering, I sleep, eat, and spend all day right here in this big ole recliner. It’s all arranged just so…and I know it looks a mess, but I know where everything is. That’s why this tour is off limits!

The Nest

Dubbed “the nest,” I’m surrounded by some of my Etsy inventory, which I struggle to get up and photograph while trying to hold camera and walker.

A Vintage Picker’s Home Tour~

The Foyer~

The foyer holds my beautiful antique German lamp, which I inherited, and cherish. Hubby, who loves lamps, made murmuring noises against it early in our marriage. Because I love and respect him, I always try to give over to his wishes. I told him there was NO WAY I was going to get rid of it!

Dining Room~

What in the heck is this?? THAT, my dear friends, is what my dining room table looks like most of all the time. Catching the garage sale junk treasures as they arrive. My hubby doesn’t complain, bless his heart. You see, he has this tiny problem…he can’t throw anything away.

Dining Room~

You can still see some of my nice furniture somewhere under all the clutter. Speaking of clutter, would you believe I used to be totally OCD about it?? Not anymore since I became a picker.

Sideboard/Dresser

The dresser was in my booth, and didn’t sell, so I brought it home to use as a sideboard.

Dining Room~

THIS is my real pride and joy and it’s the one thing I do not allow clutter to touch. And just look at that white mirror that somehow appeared! I can’t move it though…I’m holding on for dear life to my walker!

Powder Bath~

Moving on to the powder bath…I can’t show you the whole thing, but I want you to see my framed vintage outhouse postcards…I don’t like the olive green background, but I love the postcards. Outhouses in a powder bath…pretty appropriate, I’d say.

Hall~

I found this unusual brass and copper mirror at an antique exhibition years ago. I call it the “Jester mirror.” I love it…does anyone know the name for this style?

My hubby has a thing for clocks too…we have a grandfather clock, banjo clock, and the rectangular one from Germany. Doesn’t it look nice on the floor??? It’s been parked there for the last 3 years.

Moving on past the Master Bedroom…I actually debated about whether you needed to see the unmade bed, but we’ll pass. I used to be OCD about making it too.

Sunroom~

Now we come to the Sunroom. We’re in here a lot, or were until I created the Nest in the other room.

This little drop leaf side table is a new acquisition. Hubby brought that home one day when he agreed to go to yard sales for me.

We need more furniture like we need a hole in the head.

This is a future project waiting in the wings…you can’t see all the scratches, but it’s a favorite chest. Are you wondering why the drawer is open? Hubby is of the mentality…”why close it when I got to open it all the time?”

Breakfast Room~

This is the breakfast room table. When we moved in 20 years ago, it was one of our few splurges. And the tablecloth on top…I’ve got to show you that sometime. It’s what you call “vintage linen,” which is why I can get away with using what is not only stained, but full of holes too. And yes, I bought it that way. I tell my guests they are getting to eat on the “shabby chic” tablecloth. What can I say? I’m a rule breaker! The colors are perfect. And I love it.

If you haven’t guessed by now, I like things that are different. I fell in love with this pair of funky bar stools. The other one is slightly different.

Shouting out to my blog friends, Pam @ House of Hawthorne’s with her picnic basket Christmas tree and Sharon @ The Blue Willow House with how to renew a vintage picnic basket...

See, I DO have a picnic basket! In my last post, Top Ten Things I Look for in Yard Sales, I said I didn’t collect them, and I don’t, but this was such a find, I couldn’t pass it up.

Two small guest rooms remain, but I’ll save that and the rest for when I do Part II.

Before I go, isn’t this a cool picture? I found it at a garage sale for $5. I just love all the detail.

Hope you enjoyed the Vintage Picker Off Limits Home Tour! Leave me a comment if you even want to see a Part 2!
