Mystery Items #3 Revealed

May 11, 2017 by Florence 10 Comments

If you remember the post from a few days ago…..Mystery Items #3 for you to identify. I purposely decided to hide the comments from everyone. Today I’m reporting on the results!

Mystery Items Revealed~

The real question became~

~whether #1 was a napkin holder, or both were a vintage desk set. And what was that thing on the right.

 The Votes~

Thing on the left:

Napkin holder: 3 votes

Envelope holder: 5 votes

 “The thing on the right”:

Cookbook holder: 5 votes

Memo Pad holder: 5 votes

There were several “don’t knows” and miscellaneous guesses.

mystery items 3 revealed

So I conducted a little test~

The thing on the left is holding the smallest napkins I have….beverage napkins, but the scale looks a bit off to me.

The thing on the right cannot begin to hold that cookbook up. It would fall over if it didn’t have the back.

mystery items 3 revealed

Whereas here are the envelopes and memo pad….

a better scale, yes?

Several people told me the memo pad holder should lie on its back, so maybe it’s for loose note paper.

mystery items 3 revealed
Not sure whether it lies on its back or upright…

And as for the funny looking tools?

mystery items 3 revealed
Rosette iron

Just about everybody either knew what they were called, or how they were used.

The flower-like one is a “Rosette Cookie Iron” or “Timbale Set.” The purpose was to dip into batter, then fry in hot oil, and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Sounds pretty good, huh? Kind of like the stuff you used to eat at the fair, and came home with a tummy-ache (or at least I did.)

So why is all this so important anyway? Who cares?

Well, I do. Because when you sell online like I do, you have to know what it’s called before you can sell it. Before I came here to ask you guys, I probably would have called this a napkin holder, but I didn’t know what to call the other thing. Finding the first two items in a kitchen really threw me off. So there you have it….mystery solved.

Until the next mystery comes along…..

Mystery Items #3

May 7, 2017 by Florence 50 Comments

Mystery items #3…I acquired fairly recently….Item #2, I definitely have no idea about. I appreciate your help!

You want to see past mystery items?

Mystery Items #1 is here.

Mystery Items #2 is here.

 Identify the Mystery Items

1. mystery items 3

In case you can’t tell, these are ceramic, and I found them in the kitchen of an estate sale. I assumed the one on the left was a napkin holder, but what’s that thing on the right? These are both vintage pieces.

Left item: 5″L x 2″W x 2.5″T. It is rather short. Most napkins are going to fall over and not look pretty.

Right item: 3.5″L x 1″W x 5-1/4″T

I asked the male cashier about the thing on the right, and he said flippantly, “oh it’s for memos, YOU know…memo pads!” All the while he’s flipping his post it notes pad into it, and I’m nodding like I agree 100%. But I’m thinking…a memo holder with a napkin holder??? Doesn’t make sense.

So now I’m thinking the thing on the left COULD be an envelope holder! What do you think? And the thing on the right looks a little odd to me anyway, even if it is for memo pads. Maybe the whole thing is a desk set. I just don’t have a clue.

In our house, we didn’t have “desk sets” LOL. Just plain ole, plain ole, if you know what I mean.

2.

mystery items 3

mystery items 3

I have no idea what these are, but I picked them up at an estate sale for 50¢. They are both metal, and rather thick as you can see. The one with the cup on the end is 9-1/2″L. The other 8-1/2″L. The handles don’t go straight down, but at an angle.

The one on the right reminds me of a cow brand (like I’ve ever in my life seen what a cow brand looks like).

OK, over to you! And thanks in advance for your help with the mysteries!

Y’all, I have a confession to make….you have been leaving lovely comments and super guesses. I’ve enjoyed reading each one, and I will post them towards the end of the week with my comments. But I have found with “Mystery Items” posts, a few people guess it & other people coming along behind are going….”oh, well, they’ve guessed it, so there’s no point in my leaving a comment.” I know what you’re thinking! NO! I LOVE your comments & guesses, so if you’re checking back, that’s why you aren’t seeing anything.

8 Curbside Finds…a Sneak Peek at a Vintage Picker’s Stash…

April 29, 2017 by Florence 34 Comments

Are you ever curious about what a picker has in their stash?? I know I am. I would love a let-it-all-hang-out tour of the spaces where people pull their pending projects from, wouldn’t you? I imagine a space that’s so full, there’s no room for the car. Or a space that’s so full, they had to rent a storage facility like another picker friend of mine.

My basement is the repository for all big items, and it’s getting that full! I might show you that in another post, but today you’ll see 8 curbside finds…a sneak peek at a picker’s stash, and how long I’ve had them.  I’m stumped over most of these and could use a little advice too.

8 Curbside Finds...a Sneak Peek at a Vintage Picker's Stash...

By the way, if you like let-it-all-hang-out tours, I’ve got another one for you….Vintage Picker Off Limits Home Tour. My answer to the home tours of perfect houses in magazine-spreads.

8 Treasures from the Trash or What Should I Do with These Castoff Gems~

1.

8 Curbside Finds...a Sneak Peek at a Picker's Stash...

Hubby and I were walking in the neighborhood at dusk and found this sticking out of a nearby trash pile. Oh how I love good junk!!! I picked it up without seeing clearly what it was. It was wood, but missing the stand, and the husband who can fix anything, says he doesn’t know how to fix it. Unbelievable! He probably just doesn’t want to!

It was the next day before I saw the painted images on the shelves. I’ve had this for about 3-4 years. I know it’s as outdated as heck, but I really kinda like the cute little images. Am I crazy?? I know there’s a repurpose in this somewhere!

How it would look if opened out

2.

This has been in the stash about 10 years. It’s a 2″ thick, heavy wooden piece we surmise broke off a mahogany table. But gollee, are tables this thick? I don’t think so! No telling its origins. We found it in a trash pile in Florida after Hurricane Ivan went whirling through. Last year I ran out of time to turn it into a Christmas sign.

3.

Just a simple ladderback chair, found in the trash, and in surprisingly good condition. I really hate to cut it up to use its parts, so I’ll probably just paint. This year I was invited to take part in a vintage market, but didn’t feel I had enough items ready, so I really need to work on more of my junk!

4.

I think this is such an interesting piece! We were at an estate sale about 4-5 years ago. Not a darn thing at the sale I wanted because everything was very expensive. And this in the trash! You think it came off the top of an old dresser?? I’m still stumped on what to do with it. I was thinking of asking the hubby who can fix anything to make some little hinged doors for the 2 drawer fronts. Then I might paint it white and hang it on the wall. What do you think?

8 Curbside Finds...a Sneak Peek at a Picker's Stash...

5.

I’m not sure what this was, but found at an estate sale for $1. I’ve had it a few months. I plan to turn it into a sign. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

8 Curbside Finds...a Sneak Peek at a Picker's Stash...

6.

Here is a round side table bought at an estate sale for $10, and owned about 2 years while I’ve been trying to decide how much of it to paint. I almost hate to paint away that pretty wood grain. The top is scratched up particle board. Would you paint it all over?

8 Curbside Finds...a Sneak Peek at a Picker's Stash...

7.

Believe it or not, these are parts of a termite-eaten red deck rail I found in someone’s trash. The shapely red posts caught my eye, but I haven’t decided how I want to use them yet….probably in the yard, and yes, the termites are gone. The straight stakes extending down from each post are metal so they could be anchored in the ground somehow. I’ve had these a few months, and I’m still thinking it over. Any ideas?

8 Curbside Finds...a Sneak Peek at a Picker's Stash...

8.

A wooden mail organizer that I’ve had about 3 years and it’s been dark brown wood, then pink. I made the mistake of decoupaging different images on the 3 front sections…. and they just didn’t look quite right. Another makeover was in store. I sanded all the mistakes off, and gave it a new paint job using Dixie Belle “Dropcloth,” and it looks so much better. I’m in the process of stenciling now. You will see that soon. Here it is in its previously pink state. It looks muted, but I assure you, it was very pink!

8 Curbside Finds...a Sneak Peek at a Picker's Stash...

That’s it for the sneak peek of my stash. If you have any ideas about the 8 curbside finds, I’m all ears!

Favorite Junking Finds Weekend Sylacauga

April 15, 2017 by Florence 26 Comments

What a favorite junking finds weekend in Sylacauga! I’m following my own advice to go picking out of town, and it’s usually worth the extra time, gas, and getting up extra early. Blogging friend, Wanda Horton Craft, fellow Alabama girl, who blogs at JustVintageHome, and does estate sales on the side, Sentimental Suitcase Estate Sales, had been telling me about a fabulous upcoming sale in Sylacauga…about an hour’s drive, and starting at 8 am. I planned to leave & get there on time, but I overslept. Then I forgot about how bad early morning rush hour traffic was, so I arrived 30 minutes late! Horrors! Lots of stuff was gone, but I still found treasures I’m happy with. And I’m going to show you all of it.

Favorite Weekend Junking FindsVintage Finds~

One of the last finds of the day on the last pass through…pair of brass curtain tiebacks $5 SOLD $35

Vintage brass cricket boxes $1/ea

favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

Vintage White Shoulders Cologne, still sealed. $3

favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

Sweet vintage cabinet cards…(the one on the right was wrapped in plastic…believe this is a black/white photo of a painting.) But whatever, it is still very nice.favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

The vintage snapshot you can see a little clearer here….it looks like 1890’s to me. All 3 of these for $1.

favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

2 Sweet little ring dishes…the one on the left is made in England, and has a tiny chip on the dish, not on the rabbits. Darn, I didn’t notice that chip until I got it home! $5.

The one on the right is a collectible pottery ring dish by M.A. Hadley… $3 SOLD $14

favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

A couple of “man things.” We already have a full spool of fishing line, but no matter. 25¢/ea

favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

Drum roll………..#2 favorite find of the day….collection of industrial junk pieces. $3. If I don’t think of a way to repurpose these, I’ll put them in my Etsy shop.

Drum roll and trumpets…….#1 favorite find of the day……

Ornate Silverplate footed butter dish by FB Rogers…..$8 SOLD $48

favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

What I love about this is its hinged roll top lid with glass insert inside….

favorite junking finds weekend in sylacauga

Silverplate usually does well for me, but I’ve only dealt in trays, so far.

Isn’t this a pretty box? I can hardly resist vanity boxes of any kind. It has a hard coating with a lot of small chips around the edges, which bothered me.

favorite-junking-finds-weekend
Old chipped vanity box

I touched them up using an artist’s brush and a mix of acrylic paints. It looks much better now, don’t you think? I posted this on Instagram recently, asking if you would buy it if you saw it….so would you?

I’m really happy with the favorite junking finds! What do y’all think? What is your favorite?
